There’s a perception out there that French wine is fancy wine. And some of it is of course. So-called First Growth Bordeaux wines like Chateau Lafite can set you back more than $2,000 a bottle here in Australia while a bottle of Burgundy’s finest – Domaine de le Romanee Conti – can currently be found for just under $40,000. Yes – $40,000! But wines like that have no more relevance to the average French drinker than they do to the average Australian. Stop into a French supermarket and you’re more likely to find a wine like the one I’m reviewing today – Arrogant Frog Croak Rotie Shiraz 2017.

Admittedly, the wine you find on the shelves in France may not be called something like Arrogant Frog, nor is it likely to have a pun name like Croak Rotie (a play on the name of a famous wine appellation – Cote Rotie). But the offerings are typically cheap and cheerful. Like today’s wine, they also often come from Languedoc, which is France’s (and the world’s) biggest producing wine region.

Arrogant Frog is produced by one of Languedoc’s biggest producers, Domaine Paul Mas and is sold through Woolworths-owned stores here in Australia. This particular drop is labelled Shiraz though it actually contains 9% Viognier (Shiraz-Viognier is a common blend in the south of France).

The Review: Arrogant Frog Croak Rotie Shiraz 2017

There are red fruits and smoked meats on the nose. Quite pleasant for a $10 wine. The palate is sweetish and slightly fruity with bugger-all in the way of tannins. There’s not much “length” here – it’s not a wine that lingers in the mouth after swallowing. It goes down easily. Nothing particularly noteworthy about it but nothing nasty either. It’s a good picnic wine. You can do much worse for the price.
