Houghton Wines is one of Australia’s legendary producers, with a history dating all the way back to the 1830s. They produce a huge range of wines, many of which are great value. That includes today’s wine, the Houghton Margaret River Chardonnay 2017, which I’ll get to in a moment.

Houghton’s roots lie in Western Australia’s Swan Valley, though it now sources grapes from all over WA’s wine regions. The winery became famous across Australia for its “White Burgundy” (today known as White Classic), which has been a staple for many households going back to 1936. It was also home to legendary winemaker Jack Mann who oversaw an incredible 51 vintages at Houghton.

Like many great old Aussie wineries, Houghton has been passed around from one corporate owner to another over the years. It’s part of Accolade Wines, which is in turn is owned by a private equity group. Private equity firms don’t get a great wrap but Houghton seems to have done well under a range of owners. Fingers crossed that continues into the future.

The Review: Houghton Margaret River Chardonnay 2017

There are some fairly prominent pineapple and citrus aromas on the nose. There is also a nice acidity through the palate that builds into a refreshing finish. Everything in place. Nothing to criticise here.
