Murdoch Hill Pinot Noir 2017

VALUE FOR MONEY?

Murdoch Hill is a family-owned producer in the Adelaide Hills. They’ve been farming the area since the 1930s, growing potatoes and raising chickens among other things, but switched to winemaking in the late 1990s. The youngest son Michael is now the winemaker. He ain’t too bad at it either, based on the wine I’m reviewing today – Murdoch Hill Pinot Noir 2017.

The winery grows the grapes for many of its own wines at its estate, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, this Pinot Noir is sourced from “a selection of premium vineyards” across the Adelaide Hills region.

Pinot Noir is arguably the greatest of all red wine grapes (though Cabernet would have something to say about that) but as I’ve said before – it’s hard to find a good one at a fair price, let alone one you would call good value. So, let’s see how this Murdoch Hill fares.

The Review: Murdoch Hill Pinot Noir 2017

This is a really pleasant thing to smell, with a deep nose of cherries, roses and forest floor aromas. It’s light bodied, with very fine tannins and a fresh line of acidity. Basically, everything is in balance here and everything is done well. Actually, it’s pretty moreish – the kind of wine you don’t want to stop drinking. I reckon it will go well with a wide range of foods.

At $28 a bottle, this is probably pushing the limits of affordability for many people. Even so, I think it would make a good dinner party wine and may suit someone looking for an occasional splurge (or someone with a higher wine budget). It punches above its weight value wise and is an absolute steal in Pinot Noir terms
