Woodlands is one of Margaret River’s top producers, along with the likes of Cullen and Moss Wood. They produce some outstanding wines, including their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon. This Wilyabrup Valley Cabernet Merlot is one of their more affordable offerings and is a pretty reliable bet most years and, if you want to get adventurous, you can often find previous vintages for well under $20 at auction sites like Langtons.
The Review: Woodlands Wilyabrup Valley Cabernet Merlot 2015
Lovely nose: violets, earth, blackberries, tobacco, cedar. There is a pleasant but assertive acidity and a gentle drag of tannins coming into a very long, enjoyable finish. It’s got all the trappings of a top wine. I didn’t like it that much on first pour but it opened up nicely after half an hour in the decanter so make sure you give it some air. It would make a pretty impressive dinner party wine
