Yalumba Y-Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Price : $10

VALUE FOR MONEY?

April 26, 2019

The Yalumba’s Y-Series range are consistently some of the safest bets around in the circa $10 price range. I’m yet to try a bad one, frankly. These are mass-produced, affordable and widely available wines that over-deliver on quality. A rare beast indeed. Today I’m reviewing the Yalumba Y-Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2017.

Cabernet Sauvignon is not the hardest wine to make cheaply – that’d be Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo – but it’s not the easiest either. There are plenty of versions around this price range that are seriously lacking balance. At best, many just taste like generic red wines, with no way to tell whether they are Cabernet or Merlot or Shiraz.

So how’s this one?

The Review: Yalumba Y-Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

It’s good – smells nice, like a proper wine – earthy, some red and black fruits. It’s very cabernet-like – rich and full-bodied. There’s a fruity palate with refined acidity and some gentle tannins. An easy one to drink, as far as full-bodied wines go. It still tastes like a mass-produced wine, if I can put it that way, but a good one nonetheless. One of the best options around for a $10 Cabernet.
